In our current culture where youth and beauty are revered fervently, I am exploring the attractive qualities in ageing.
Disability can socially victimize and isolate the sufferer. In my work on this subject I examine the humour inherent therein, conveying beauty to counter aversion.
Alice is a disabled artist who uses her condition of Secondary Progressive MS as inspiration.
Alice trained in Textile Art in London in the mid 1960’s, but for the past 15 years she has focussed her practice on mapping the deterioration of her body as a result of ageing and MS. It is, however, essential that her deterioration is depicted with beauty and humour.
As she has lost the strength in her hands, she has explored new media, photography and video in particular. Collage has always been a favorite, and now her textile pieces, formerly hand sewn, incorporate machine embroidery and beads stuck on with glue.
